How Good Are Pool Cover Pumps?

Purchasing a new swimming pool, whether above ground or inground, is a complicated process if you have little or no understanding of the variety of different things you will need to do to keep your new pool both sanitary and safe. In even the best pools the rule is to change the chemicals regularly, check all of the different cleaners, strainers and filters and, in the case of above ground pools, whether expensive ones or cheap ones, checking the liner for damage.

Swimming pool covers are used to both keep foreign material out of the pool and as a safety measure. Pool covers, especially winter covers, tend to collect water however and as the weight of the water adds up it puts strain on the cover and you will need a pool cover pump to keep it clear.

A pool cover pump can be very useful and save you and your family a great deal of money. These pumps come in several varieties, including plain water pumps, automatic pumps sump pumps and submersible pumps. Pool covers are meant to protect the pool itself but, over a period of time, especially in the case of winter covers, will build up water and cause stress on the integrity of the pool cover. Pool cover pumps like Little Giant for instance, which gets some of the better reviews, are used to remove the excess water from the pool cover.

Pool cover pumps are essentially simple electric pumps but come with many features that standard pumps do not have. When used on the pool cover itself it will drain the water completely, making it much easier to remove. If you live in an area with lots of rain this can be both a time saver and help keep your property from being flooded. One of the really great things about this pump is that you can pick the pump and use it elsewhere on your property to drain excess water. Some people even use these pumps to drain boats, basements after a storm or to help clear an area after a plumbing leak.

Installing a swimming pool for your family is a great thing but they do require a great deal of care. Swimming pools, for the most part, are an expensive investment. Pool cover pumps are affordable, light, easy to use, and versatile enough to have many other uses besides protecting your pool.

When you decide it is time to protect your investment you should do the research on the different types of pumps available and pick the one that is best for your particular location and set of circumstances. If you live in an area that is subject to heavy rains or flooding you should consider getting a pool cover pump that is both submersible and easily moved from one location to another. If you live in a relatively dry area and want to use your pool cover for mainly safety purposes a pump will still be necessary but a basic pump will serve you just as well as a higher priced automatic submersible for instance.
